As the list of Fine & Old Instruments is constantly changing, please enquire for current Stock List. We currently have in excess of 400 instruments in stock, from `Starter' outfits, to Quality New and Old Instruments. Old/Antique instruments will all have been through the workshop, and be properly set-up, and ready to play, although we are happy to change strings, subject to conditions. Where commission sale instruments are being sold by us, no warranty is given, and the sale is between the buyer & seller .

Setups 2 and 3 can be undertaken at any time, before or after purchase.
Special prices are available on application for Makers and Teachers who wish to set up the instrument themselves and to have the instruments supplied "bridge down" etc.

Outfits can be sent out by Mail Order, but we strongly recommend that better quality and old instruments are collected. You are of course always welcome to visit us and try out the instruments in our comfortable `Trying Out Rooms', by appointment please to ensure our undivided attention, and to `book' the room. Although we are open Monday - Friday, we are often able to open on a Saturday, but by Appointment only.

When you upgrade an instrument purchased from us, to a better instrument, our policy is to refund the original purchase price (less VAT), assuming that the part exchange/outfit is in a satisfactory condition for resale. Simple but fair! An outfit comprises Instrument, Bow, Case and a rosin, everything you need to start!

All outfits are supplied from stock, set-up using the factory supplied strings, and bridge, unless specified otherwise. When ordered by mail order, we de-tune the strings slightly to avoid damage in transit.

The New Prima 90 Violin Outfit

This New instrument replaces the Mayflower instrument, and has Rosewood fittings instead of stained hardwood fittings, and a new Primavera Case Price £76.

New Violiner Student Outfit

This new outfit has been sourced by us to replace the Hidersine Giovanni, discontinued by the Importer, and we are pleased to announce that it is in a different league, as regards performance. The price, whilst higher than the Giovanni used to be, is less than the replacement violin which Hidersine will announce in May/June, and far exceeds the specification for that instrument.

STENTOR MESSINA & ARCADIA VIOLINS

After years of badgering Stentor, we are at last seeing an improvement in the quality and tone of their instruments. Its not that they weren't O.K., it's just that they didn't keep up with the competition. Stentor revolutionised the Student violin market in the 70's with instruments that at the time were better than the competition, and cheaper! It was to such a point that the name Stentor became synonymous with Student instruments, in the way that Hoover did with vacuum cleaners. Sadly resting on your laurels, when all around are snapping at your heels is not particularly sensible. However it seems to be changing, and whilst the basic Stentor Student, and Student 1 violins are in our opinion still pretty awful, the Stentor 2 is getting better, although pricey for what it is. It seems that they are concentrating on improving their better instruments first, and to this end we are now pleased to be stocking the Messina, and Arcadia, both of which are leaps & bounds better than before. The Messina
The Messina is a Strad Copy Violin, made of quality tonewoods with an ebony fingerboard and fittings. The finely flamed maple 2 piece back is varnished in a red/brown varnish as is the fine grained spruce front. It has double purfling to add to its fine looks. It is fitted with a Hill tailpiece with a single E adjuster, has an Aubert Bridge, and is strung with Pirastro Tonica's. It is fitted with a Guarneri chinrest. Well set-up by our Luthiers, it is sold ready to play at only £450, well below the RRP for a luthier setup instrument.

The Arcadia
The Arcadia is also a Strad Copy Violin, made of quality tonewoods with an ebony fingerboard and fittings. Whilst most manufacturers would say it has an Antiqued finish, Stentor call it `Distressed'. The beautifully flamed maple 2 piece back is varnished in a dark yellow/brown varnish as is the fine grained spruce front. It has double purfling to add to its fine looks. It is fitted with a Hill tailpiece with a single E adjuster, has an Aubert Bridge, and is strung with Pirastro Tonica's. It is fitted with a Guarneri chinrest. Well set-up by our Luthiers, it is sold ready to play at only £720, well below the RRP for a luthier setup instrument.

Yang Ming Antiqued

This superb Hand Made Chinese Violin is another of the DeLille range, selected and imported by them to Belgium, where it is carefully varnished using European varnish. The instrument is then hand finished by John Sydenham and set up by Steve Strong here, resulting in the best collaboration of Chinese and European skills. Good Old South German Violin
This fine old German violin, made in Markneukirchen in the early 1900's, is a good example of the excellent instruments made in that region. Completely and tastefully restored by John Sydenham, this violin is just waiting for a new owner, who will appreciate its sweet sound and good looks. It has a finely flamed 2 piece back. Strung with Dominants, this violin has a beautifully clear sound, which will of course improve with playing. Price £1500

Frederick Cannon Violin 1921.
This is a good example of this fine London Makers work. It is in superb condition and has been tastefully restored by John Sydenham, and strung with Dominants. The 2 Piece back exhibits some fine flaming. Whilst the varnish on the table exhibits some crackling, it does not detract from the overall instrument. It is typically sweet and gentle toned. Price £2800, a bargain price for such a good old english instrument by this fine London maker.

Good Old German/Czech Border Violin
This fine old violin, made around the German Czech Border, in the early 1900's, is a good example of the excellent instruments made in that region. Completely and tastefully restored by Steve. Strong, this violin is just waiting for a new owner, who will appreciate its sweet sound and good looks. It has a beautiful one piece back with super `flaming'. Beares Tertis Model 14" Viola.

Ever looked for a small viola but didn't want to compromise the bigger Viola sound. Well look no further, this new Viola Outfit, fully setup and improved by Master Luthier John Sydenham, is just what you are looking for. It is a superb looking instrument, which can make the transition for a Violin player so much easier.

Whilst it would better from better strings than those supplied from the factory, it works pretty well on the multi strand metal cored strings supplied, so you can spread the cost of replacing the strings until after you have played the instrument in. The fingerboard/neck is finely made, making playing it easier for those possibly with movement restriction in their fingers.

DOUBLE BASSES

JPB Fitness ¾ Size Double Bass
This Chinese Double Bass has a solid spruce front and solid maple back, and has been specially selected by us as superb value for money for a Double Bass. Strung with steel strings, this amazing instrument really takes a lot of beating. It is tastefully varnished and is fitted with quality brass machine heads. The outfit is completed with a canvas cover, and an ebony frog bow, in case you need to perform arco pieces as well as jazz.
Priced at an amazing £850 it has to be unbeatable value for the money.

Whilst we acknowledge the availability of cheaper basses, especially on internet based companies, these seem generally to be poor quality, and of course not supplied set up and ready to play. They also tend to be heavy in weight, and of inferior sound quality, and in our experience not a wise purchase.
We also stock, basses for the more advanced players, but due to space limitations, we have to limit the number of basses on display.

Please enquire, should you be looking for a new or replacement bass, we will happily try to assist you. It is highly unlikely however, that we will stock old Master basses. Our experience tells us that this is an area we should avoid, because of the problems of splitting & cracking of old basses. Please ring if you are looking for an old bass, and we will happily advise a good reputable source for such instruments.
